Australian practice Austin Maynard Architects has completed the renovation and extension of a one level weatherboard terrace house in Melbourne, Australia.
Completed in 2015, this project maintained the home’s existing facade and front two rooms, while a large lightwell separates the original structure from the new build. The project includes two additional bedrooms and a bathroom above an open kitchen, living, and dining space. Referred to by the architects as ‘mills’, the dwelling is articulated around two core ideas: firstly, that the floor is a giant toy box for the client’s young children, and secondly that the rear elevation filters the strong sunlight that had previously dominated the backyard.

This colorful home in Melbourne, Australia was carried out in two styles some modern, some rustic styles. Envisioned by Austin Maynard Architects, Alfred House is an addition and reconfiguration of an existing two-story building, with two bedrooms and a lean-to that had little relationship with the exterior space.
The aim of the project was to expand outdoor areas by embracing the laneway in an unconventional and playful manner. By building on the boundary and internalizing the back garden, the clients now have this open space which nobody uses, the architects explained. By opening the doors to the back, it extends their property and allows light and air to pour in.
